RESUMO: Pachira aquatica (Malvaceae), conhecida como munguba, é cultivada para arborização de muitas cidades brasileiras. No campus de Seropédica da UFRRJ, observou-se o desfolhamento de um espécime de Pachira aquatica, com a presença de larvas, pré-pupas e pupas de besouro da subfamília Hyperinae, que foram criadas em laboratório até a emergência dos adultos; esses insetos foram identificados como pertencentes à espécie Phelypera griseofasciata Capiomont (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Essas formas imaturas (n=86) foram novamente coletadas nesse mesmo espécime e criadas em laboratório para verificar a ocorrência de parasitismo. Foram obtidos 128 adultos de Jaliscoa nudipennis Bouček (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), responsáveis por 44,2% do parasitismo total. A razão sexual foi de 0,70, portanto, o maior número de descendentes foi de fêmeas. Observaram-se ainda os dimorfismos inter e intrasexuais em J. nudipennis quanto ao formato da cabeça e às características das asas. Este estudo trata-se do primeiro registro de ambas as espécies de insetos associadas a Pachira aquatica no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

ABSTRACT: Pachira aquatica (Malvaceae), known as munguba, is cultivated for afforestation of many Brazilian cities. In Seropédica campus of UFRRJ, it was observed the defoliation of one specimen of Pachira aquatica with presence of larvae, pre-pupae, and pupae of beetle of the subfamily Hyperinae, which were reared in laboratory until the emergence of the adults; these insects were identified as belonging to the species Phelypera griseofasciata Capiomont (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). These immature forms (n=86) were again collected in this same specimen and reared in laboratory to verify the occurrence of parasitism. It was obtained 128 adults of Jaliscoa nudipennis Bouček (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), responsible for 44.2% of total parasitism. The sex ratio was 0.70, so the highest number of offspring was of females. Intersexual and intrasexual dimorphisms were also observed in J. nudipennis regarding the shape of the head and characteristics of the wings. This study is the first record of both insect species associated with Pachira aquatica in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

RESUMO: Detritivoria e parasitismo são hábitos alimentares já registrados para os forídeos do gênero Megaselia Rondani. Os resultados do presente estudo confirmam o hábito parasitário das larvas de Megaselia. Este é o primeiro registro de adulto de Pachylia ficus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) como hospedeiro de Megaselia scalaris (Loew, 1866) e Megaselia sp. (Diptera: Phoridae).

ABSTRACT: Detritivoria and parasitism are dietary habits already registered for the phorids of the genus Megaselia Rondani. The results of this study confirm the parasitic habit of Megaselia larvae. This is the first Pachylia ficus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) adult record as a host of Megaselia scalaris (Loew, 1866) and Megaselia sp. (Diptera: Phoridae).

ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the foraging and feeding preferences of Coptotermes gestroi (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae) in wood from four forest species and Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) in urban areas of the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro, São Gonçalo and Seropédica, RJ, Brazil. Wooden and MDF stakes were buried in the soil in the presence of C. gestroi foragers, in multiple choice assays, where the stakes remained for 15, 30, 60 and 90 days. The highest occurrence of foragers was in Alcântara 2 (São Gonçalo). In three areas, the stakes presented no foraging at any time during the exposure period. Generally, the longer the exposure period, the greater the occurrence of C. gestroi in the stakes and their loss of mass. The Pinus elliottii stakes had a greater loss of mass caused by C. gestroi, followed by the MDF, suggesting the need for preservative treatment of these materials prior to use.

RESUMO: Os gafanhotos das famílias Acrididae e Romaleidae (Orthoptera) estão entre os insetos desfolhadores de helicônias, e vem ganhando status de pragas em cultivos comerciais dessas flores no Brasil. O presente estudo objetivou identificar o gafanhoto de ocorrência no município de Santo Antônio de Pádua, RJ (Brasil) causador de desfolhamento em helicônias; avaliar o efeito de diferentes níveis de sombreamento sobre a população desse gafanhoto e parâmetros produtivos de helicônias; e se existe preferência do gafanhoto para oviposição entre as helicônias avaliadas. O experimento foi em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas (quatro níveis de sombreamento: 0%, 30%, 50% e 80% na parcela e quatro espécies de Heliconia: H. psittacorum, H. stricta, H. wagneriana e H. psittacorum x H. spathocircinata ‘Golden Torch’ na subparcela), com quatro repetições. O gafanhoto desfolhador foi identificado como Cornops frenatum frenatum (Acrididae). À medida que o sombreamento se tornou mais denso, diminuíram o número de orifício de oviposição do gafanhoto e o número de brotações laterais. O sombreamento não influenciou o número de ninfas e adultos de C. f. frenatum e o número de hastes florais. H. wagneriana foi a espécie mais preferida para oviposição por C. f. frenatum. Os resultados sugerem que o uso de tela para sombreamento das plantas de helicônia pode auxiliar no controle da população de C. f. frenatum, porém, deve-se observar o padrão de exigência de luminosidade das helicônias para garantir a produtividade.

ABSTRACT: Grasshoppers of the families Acrididae and Romaleidae (Orthoptera) are among the insects that defoliate heliconias and have been gaining status as pests of commercial crops of these plants in Brazil. The objectives of the present study were to identify the grasshopper defoliating heliconias in the municipality of Santo Antônio de Pádua, RJ (Brazil), to evaluate the effect of different levels of shade on the population of this grasshopper and the production parameters of heliconias, and to determine if this grasshopper has an oviposition preference among the heliconias evaluated. The experiment was in a completely randomized block design, in subdivided plots (four levels of shade in the plot, 0%, 30%, 50% and 80%, and four species of Heliconia: H. psittacorum, H. stricta, H. wagneriana and H. psittacorum x H. spathocircinata ‘Golden Torch’ in the subplot), with four replications. The grasshopper was identified as Cornops frenatum frenatum (Acrididae). An increase in shade resulted in a decrease in the number of oviposition holes from the grasshopper and the number of lateral buds. Shade did not influence the number of C. f. frenatum nymphs and adults and the number of flower stems. H. wagneriana was the most preferred species for oviposition by C. f. frenatum. Results suggested using screens to shade heliconia plants can help control C. f. frenatum populations, however, the light requirements of the heliconias should be considered to guarantee productivity.

RESUMO: Aleurocanthus woglumi é uma praga exótica, amplamente disseminada no Brasil, com grande preferência pelos citros, mas com hábito alimentar polífago. A participação do estado do Rio de Janeiro na produção brasileira de citros é pequena; todavia, ainda ocorrem políticas públicas de incentivo à citricultura no Estado. Em 2010, a ocorrência dessa praga no estado do Rio de Janeiro foi confirmada no município de Cachoeiras de Macacu. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar a disseminação de A. woglumi nesse Estado, levantar novas espécies de plantas hospedeiras, identificar e avaliar a população de seus inimigos naturais presentes em dois pomares de lima-ácida ( Citrus latifolia ) 'Tahiti', infestados pela praga em Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ, Brasil. Foram realizadas coletas de folhas de citros e de outras espécies de plantas com presença de ninfas de aleirodídeos em 19 municípios, e armadilhas adesivas amarelas foram instaladas para a captura de adultos, para posterior identificação. Nos pomares de lima-ácida, coletas de folhas foram feitas para confirmar a espécie de aleirodídeo e, em se tratando de A. woglumi , coletaram-se inimigos naturais associados a essa praga diretamente nas plantas infestadas. Os resultados mostraram que A. woglumi está disseminada em 12 municípios. Três novas espécies de plantas hospedeiras de A. woglumi foram identificadas: Artocarpus heterophyllus ( Moraceae ), Pouteria caimito ( Sapotaceae ) e Struthanthus flexicaulis ( Loranthaceae ). Em Cachoeiras de Macacu, uma nova espécie de parasitoide de ninfas de A. woglumi foi assinalada: Encarsia pergandiella (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae ), enquanto que os insetos representantes da família Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) se destacaram como predadores dessa praga.

ABSTRACT: Aleurocanthus woglumi is an exotic pest, widely disseminated in Brazil, with a high preference for citrus plants, but with a polyphagous feeding habit. The contribution of the state of Rio de Janeiro in the Brazilian production of citrus fruits is small; however, there are still public policies that encourage citrus production in the state. In 2010, the appearance of this pest in Rio de Janeiro was confirmed in the municipality of Cachoeiras de Macacu. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the dissemination of A. woglumi in this state, conduct a survey of new species of host plants, identify and evaluate the population of natural enemies present at two orchards that grow 'Tahiti' limes ( Citrus latifolia ) infested by the pest in Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ, Brazil. In 19 municipalities, leaves of citrus and other species of plants presenting aleyrodid nymphs were collected, and yellow sticky traps were installed to capture adults for subsequent identification. At the 'Tahiti' lime orchards, the leaf collections were done to confirm the species of Aleyrodidae , and regarding A. woglumi , the natural enemies associated with this pest were collected directly from the infested plants. The results showed that A. woglumi is wide-spread in 12 municipalities. Three new host plants for A. woglumi were identified: Artocarpus heterophyllus ( Moraceae ) , Pouteria caimito ( Sapotaceae ) and Struthanthus flexicaulis ( Loranthaceae ). In Cachoeiras de Macacu, a new species of parasitoid of A. woglumi nymphs was named: Encarsia pergandiella (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae ), while the insects in the Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) family have stood out as predators of this pest.

Os insetos predadores da família Chrysopidae têm sido relatados tanto em ecossistemas naturais como nos agroecossistemas, sejam eles cultivos consorciados ou monocultivos. Porém, são escassas as informações sobre o comportamento das populações desses insetos nos agroecossistemas diversificados, como aqueles de base agroecológica. O presente trabalho teve o objetivo de determinar a riqueza de espécies de crisopídeos e avaliar a influência de diferentes cultivos agrícolas, assim como de fatores climáticos na abundância desses insetos em sistema de produção orgânica diversificada. O estudo foi conduzido de setembro de 2008 a agosto de 2009, por meio de amostragens semanais de adultos de Chrysopidae em áreas do Sistema Integrado de Produção Agroecológica, em Seropédica (RJ), cada qual com um tipo de sistema de cultivo (rotação milho-mucuna/olerícolas, cafeeiros sombreados e rotação cana-de-açúcar/pastagem de braquiária). Um total de 424 espécimes de crisopídeos foi coletado, sendo distribuídos em três espécies: Chrysoperla externa (98,1%), Ceraeochrysa cubana (1,7%) e Ceraeochrysa paraguaria (0,2%). Não houve diferença no número de adultos coletados em função dos diferentes cultivos, embora a análise de correlação evidencie que as rotações com poáceas favoreçam o aumento da sua abundância. A abundância dos crisopídeos foi influenciada pelo clima apenas no sistema de cafeeiros sombreados, sendo correlacionada negativamente com a temperatura média do ar e a com a precipitação pluvial acumulada.

The green lacewings (Chrysopidae) have been reported in natural ecosystems as well in agroecosystems, intercropping or monocropping. However, the knowledge on their behavior on different agroecosystems is scarce. The present work aimed to determine the diversity of green lacewing species and to evaluate the influence of different agricultural crops, as well as climate factors, on the abundance of these insects in an agroecologically-based organic production system. The study was conducted from September 2008 to August 2009, by performing weekly sampling of Chrysopidae adults in areas of the Integrated Production Agroecological System (SIPA) in Seropédica (RJ), each with one type of cropping system (corn-mucuna rotation/vegetable crops; shaded coffees and sugar cane/brachiaria pasture rotation). A total of 424 adult specimens were collected, belonging to three species: Chrysoperla externa (98.1%), Ceraeochrysa cubana (1.7%) and Ceraeochrysa paraguaria (0.2%). There were no differences on the number of green lacewing adults collected in the crops, although the correlation analysis showed that the crop rotations with grasses favor their abundance. The abundance of green lacewings was also influenced by the climate conditions only in the system of shaded coffees, being negatively correlated with mean air temperature and accumulated rainfall.

As formigas do gênero Atta são pragas importantes de diversas culturas agrícolas, pastagens e reflorestamentos. Os fungos entomopatogênicos estão entre os fatores naturais de mortalidade dessas formigas e por isso apresentam potencial para serem usados no controle biológico dessa praga. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo selecionar isolados de Metarhizium anisopliae e Beauveria bassiana patogênicos a soldados de Atta bisphaerica e Atta sexdens rubropilosa em condições de laboratório. Para a avaliação da patogenicidade, foram utilizados oito isolados de M. anisopliae e seis de B. bassiana. O experimento foi conduzido em DIC, sendo a parcela composta por um grupo de 10 soldados por espécie de formiga, sendo utilizadas três repetições por tratamento. Para cada isolado, três grupos de soldados foram pulverizados com suspensão de 1,0 x 10(8) conídios ml-1 e mantidos em câmara úmida (25±1°C, 80±1% de UR e no escuro) sem alimentação, sendo a mortalidade verificada diariamente. Dos 14 isolados testados, quatro de M. anisopliae e quatro de B. bassiana foram patogênicos aos soldados de ambas as espécies de formigas. A virulência foi avaliada para os isolados que causaram mortalidade igual ou maior a 50%. Para cada isolado, suspensões contendo 1,0 x 10(6) a 1,0 x 10(11) conídios ml-1 foram pulverizadas sobre três grupos de 10 soldados e igualmente acondicionados como no teste de patogenicidade. A porcentagem de mortalidade foi calculada a cada 24 horas para determinação do TL50. O isolado ENA04 de M. anisopliae foi mais patogênico, causando mais de 80% de mortalidade nos primeiros três dias após a inoculação, apresentou maior capacidade de esporular nos cadáveres dos soldados e foi o mais virulento para os soldados de A. bisphaerica, com um TL50 de 1,15 dias. Todos os isolados patogênicos aos soldados de A. sexdens rubropilosa foram igualmente virulentos.

The ants of the genus Atta are important pests of several crops, pastures and planted forests. The entomopathogenic fungi are among the natural mortality factors of these ants and because of that they have potential to be use in biological control of this pest. The present research aimed to select isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana pathogenic to soldiers of Atta sexdens rubropilosa and Atta bisphaerica under laboratory conditions. To evaluate the pathogenicity, eight isolates of M. anisopliae and six of B. bassiana were used. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, being the plots composed by a group of ten soldiers per each ant species, and three replicates per treatment. For each isolate, three groups of soldiers were sprayed with conidial suspensions containing 1.0 x 10(8) conidia ml-1, kept in moist chamber (25±1°C, 80 1% of RH in the dark) without food, and the mortality was evaluated every day. From the 14 isolates tested, four of M. anisopliae and four of B. bassiana were pathogenic to soldiers of the both ant species. The virulence was evaluated to the isolates that caused mortality equal or higher than 50%. For each isolate, suspensions containing 1.0 x 10(6) to 1.0 x 10(11) conidia ml-1 were sprayed on three groups of ten soldiers, and equally kept as on the pathogenicity test. The mortality percentage was calculated each 24 hours for determining TL50. The isolate ENA04 of M. anisopliae was the most pathogenic, causing more than 80% of mortality in the first three days after inoculation, showed higher capacity of spore production on ant cadavers, and was the most virulent to the soldiers of A. bisphaerica, with a TL50 of 1.15 days. All pathogenic isolates of A. sexdens rubropilosa soldiers were equally virulent.

Em razão da exploração crescente da fruticultura nas regiões Norte e Noroeste do Estado do Rio de Janeiro e da importância econômica e quarentenária das moscas-das-frutas para essa atividade agrícola no mundo, este estudo foi conduzido em cinco municípios dessas regiões: Cambuci, Campos dos Goytacazes, Itaocara, São Francisco do Itabapoana e São João da Barra, com objetivo de registrar as espécies de moscas-das-frutas, suas plantas hospedeiras e seus parasitóides. Os espécimes foram coletados por meio de armadilhas McPhail com solução aquosa de proteína hidrolisada a 5% e em amostras de frutos. Nas armadilhas, 4% do total de moscas-das-frutas capturadas foram Ceratitis capitata e 96% eram do gênero Anastrepha, num total de 15 espécies. Das moscas capturadas nas armadilhas, apenas seis espécies infestaram frutos entre as 12 espécies de fruteiras amostradas. Fruteiras das famílias Anacardiaceae, Malpighiaceae, Myrtaceae, Oxalidaceae, Passifloraceae e Sapotaceae foram plantas hospedeiras de moscas-das-frutas. Apenas três espécies de Anastrepha (A. fraterculus, A. sororcula e A. zenildae) infestaram goiabas da variedade comercial Paluma. Os parasitóides de larvas de moscas-das-frutas encontrados foram Doryctobracon areolatus e Aganaspis pelleranoi, parasitando-as em frutos de goiabeira e de outras fruteiras nessas regiões.

Due to the increase in fruit crops acreage in the northern and northwestern regions of Rio de Janeiro State and to the economic and quarantine importance of the fruit flies to this agricultural activity in the world, this study was carried out in five municipalities of these regions: Cambuci, Campos dos Goytacazes, Itaocara, São Francisco do Itabapoana, and São João da Barra, aiming to study the fruit fly species, their host plants and their parasitoids. The specimens were collected using McPhail traps with aqueous solution of hydrolyzed protein to 5% and in fruit samples. In the traps, 4% of the total of fruit flies captured were Ceratitis capitata and 96% were from the genus Anastrepha in a total of 15 species. From these flies captured in the traps, only six species infested fruits among the 12 species of fruits sampled. Fruit trees of the families Anacardiaceae, Malpighiaceae, Myrtaceae, Oxalidaceae, Passifloraceae and Sapotaceae were host plants of fruit flies. Only three species of Anastrepha (A. fraterculus, A. sororcula and A. zenildae) infested guavas of the commercial variety Paluma. The parasitoids of fruit fly larvae found were Doryctobracon areolatus and Aganaspis pelleranoi, parasitizing them in fruits of guava and other fruit trees in these regions.

Objetivou-se, com esse trabalho, determinar as espécies de parasitóides associados às moscas-das-frutas infestando seis cultivares de café arábica (Coffea arabica L.), em sistema de cultivo com e sem arborização, sob manejo orgânico. Uma amostra de 1 kg de frutos maduros por cultivar foi colhida em maio de 2005. Os frutos foram depositados em bandejas plásticas, contendo uma camada de areia, a qual serviu como substrato para a fase de pupa. Os pupários foram quantificados e mantidos em copos plásticos transparentes com areia até a emergência dos insetos. Sete espécies de parasitóides da ordem Hymenoptera foram identificadas, das quais cinco da família Braconidae: Asobara anastrephae (Muesebeck), Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti), Utetes anastrephae (Viereck), Opius bellus Gahan e Opius sp., e duas da Figitidae: Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes) e Lopheucoila anastrephae Weld. Larvas de Tephritidae e Lonchaeidae infestando frutos dos seis cultivares foram parasitadas por Braconidae e Figitidae, com média de 14,2% e 7,7% nos sistemas sem e com arborização, respectivamente.

The aim of this work was to determine the parasitoid species associated with fruit flies infesting six cultivars of arabic coffee under shaded and unshaded organic management. A 1kg-sample of maturing fruits per cultivar was harvested in May 2005. The fruits were placed in plastic trays containing a layer of thin sand, as a substrate for pupa phase. The puparia were quantified and kept in transparent plastic cups with sand until the emergence of the insects. Seven parasitoid species of the order Hymenoptera were identified, from which five belong to the family Braconidae: Asobara anastrephae (Muesebeck), Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti), Utetes anastrephae (Viereck), Opius bellus Gahan and Opius sp., and two of the Figitidae: Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes) and Lopheucoila anastrephae Weld. Larvae of Tephritidae and Lonchaeidae infesting fruits of the six cultivars were parasitized by Braconidae and Figitidae, with an average of 14.2% and 7.7% in the unshaded and shaded systems, respectively.

O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar as espécies de Tephritidae e Lonchaeidae (Diptera: Tephritoidea) de ocorrência em pomares de laranja doce (Citrus sinensis Osbeck) e tangerina (Citrus reticulata Blanco), no município de Araruama, RJ, durante o período de dezembro de 2002 a novembro de 2003. Os espécimes foram coletados em armadilhas McPhail contendo solução aquosa de proteína hidrolisada a 5% e em amostras de frutos de seis variedades de citros. Nas armadilhas, o total de 2.543 adultos de Tephritoidea (1.430 fêmeas e 1.023 machos) foi capturado, sendo dez espécies de Tephritidae, quatro espécies e dois morfotipos de Lonchaeidae. Dos Tephritidae e capturados nas McPhail, quatro espécies (Anastrepha fraterculus, A. obliqua, A. sororcula e Ceratitis capitata) infestaram frutos cítricos, enquanto que, dos Lonchaeidae, somente os morfotipos não infestaram as amostras de citros. Os resultados demonstram que a densidade populacional das moscas-das-frutas pode ser superestimada, quando baseada no número de moscas por armadilha, devido à captura de espécies que não infestam os frutos de interesse comercial.

This study was aimed at determining the species of Tephritidae and Lonchaeidae (Diptera: Tephritoidea) that occur on groves of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis Osbeck ) and tangerine (Citrus reticulata Blanco) in the municipality of Araruama, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from December, 2002 to November, 2003. The specimens were collected by McPhail traps with aqueous solution of hydrolyzed protein to 5% and in fruits samples of six varieties of citrus. In the traps the total of 2,543 adults of Tephritoidea (1,430 females and 1,023 males) was captured, being ten species of Tephritidae, four species and two morphotypes of Lonchaeidae. From the Tephritidae caught by the McPhail, four species (Anastrepha fraterculus, A. obliqua, A. sororcula and Ceratitis capitata) infested citric fruits while the Lonchaeidae, the morphotypes did not infest the citrus. The results showed that the population density of fruit flies may be overestimated when based on the number of flies per trap due to the capture of species that not infest the fruits of commercial interest.

Térmitas são bem conhecidos por sua capacidade de danificar e destruir madeira e produtos derivados nos trópicos e subtrópicos. Um teste de campo foi realizado para avaliar as diferenças no consumo de madeira de Pinus sp. e de três espécies de Eucalyptus por térmitas subterrâneos. O teste consistiu de estacas de madeira de cada espécie, que foram inicialmente submetidas à imersão em água por 0, 24, 48 e 72 horas, e enterradas no solo para infestação natural por térmitas subterrâneos por um período de 30, 45 e 60 dias. Três espécies de térmitas subterrâneos foram identificadas: Heterotermes longiceps (Snyder), Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), e Nasutitermes jaraguae (Holmgren) (Isoptera:Termitidae). Este é o primeiro registro da ocorrência de H. longiceps no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Embora a taxa de consumo de madeira não se correlacionou significativamente com a densidade da madeira, houve uma tendência das madeiras macias (E. robusta e Pinus sp.) serem mais consumidas do que as madeiras duras (E. pellita e E. urophylla). Entre os eucaliptos, E. robusta mostrou ser mais susceptível ao ataque de térmitas subterrâneos do que E. pellita e E. urophylla.

Termites are well -known for their capacity to damage and destroy wood and wood products of all kinds in the tropics and subtropics. A field test was undertaken to evaluate variations in wood consumption of Pinus sp. and three species of Eucalyptus by subterranean termites. The test consisted of wooden stakes of each species being initially submitted to water immersion for 0, 24, 48 and 72 h, and buried in the ground to natural infestation by subterranean termites for an exposure period of 30, 45 and 60 days. Three species of subterranean termites were identified: Heterotermes longiceps (Snyder), Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), and Nasutitermes jaraguae (Holmgren) (Isoptera: Termitidae). This is the first record of occurrence of H. longiceps in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Although the wood-consumption rates were not correlated significantly with their wood densities, there was a tendency of the softwoods (E. robusta and Pinus sp.) to be more consumed by subterranean termites than the woods of intermediate hardness (E. pellita and E. urophylla). Among the eucalyptus, E. robusta showed to be more susceptible to attack by subterranean termites than E. pellita and E. urophylla

ABSTRACT This study was performed with the aim of determining the “natural” wood preferences of subterranean termites (Isoptera) in a field feeding experiment, giving a choice between a control (Pinus sp.) and test woods: three species of Eucalyptus. Feeding preference order of subterranean termites was Pinus sp. > Eucalyptus robusta ≅ Eucalyptus urophylla > Eucalyptus pellita by the percentage of subterranean termite-damaged wooden stakes at 30-, 45-, and 60-day exposure periods in the field. Three species of subterranean termites were identified: Heterotermes longiceps (Snyder) (Rhinotermitidae), Coptotermes gestroi (Wasman) (Rhinotermitidae), and Nasutitermes jaraguae (Holmgren) (Termitidae). This is the first record of occurrence of H. longiceps in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Unidentified fungi species of Basidiomycetes infected the wood stakes of all forest species tested; although none of them were attacked by subterranean termites.
